Music Request!

This afternoon, I've been slowly (very slowly) trying to ease myself back into the writing.

For the past three years, when I write, I've been listening to Tori Amos's, Little Earthquakes. That's it. Nothing else. At peak writing days, I'll listen to it for four hours solid, day after day.

I'm starting to work on something new, so I need something new to listen to. I'm thinking that it needs to be a female vocalist, but more upbeat than the brilliant Tori.

Suggestions?

I've been listening to a lot of Nina Simone lately. Not necessarily "more upbeat" than Tori though, but still very good.

Hmmm...maybe I can find something of hers online. I'm going in a more comedic direction with this next project, so I want something a bit more cheery. Thanks!

Some female vocalists I love that are a little more upbeat (maybe) than the wonderful Ms. Tori - Susan Tedeschi, Lucinda Williams, Sade, Beth Orton (though still very mellow), Ani Difranco, Bjork, Rickie Lee Jones, Erykah Badu and The Waifs (though they do have a male member of the band but he doesn't sing often)....

Oh, some great suggestions! (And some women I love -- funny how easily the names slip away.) Maybe I'll hit the music store this afternoon and pick up a couple of titles. (The problem is I never know what really works -- the whole idea is to put me in a trance.)

Trance? Mazzy Star is great for that. Or Nina Natasia.
Have fun finding some new tunes. Let me know what you end up with.

Here are some female singers and bands with female singers that I adore: Le Tigre, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peaches, Holly Golightly, Isobel Campbell, Feist, Nico, Liz Phair, Mary Lou Lord, Sleater Kinney and Stereo Total. Good luck. And let us know what ends up putting you in the right mood to write.

I wound up buying Sade; thematically, it fits with what I'm writing, but is more mellow than some of what I'd normally listen to (just not as dark as Tori).

I'm gonna keep a list of all of these great suggestions!

Ooh I bought a double CD of Nina Simone a few weeks ago. That's one of my friends over for drinks/house cleaning soundtracks.

Not upbeat but utterly beautiful: Jane Birkin. I can burn you some CDs and send them over?

Oooh...that'd be lovely (or you can e-mail your favorites, if that's easier).

Just saw a great band last weekend -- the Weepies -- I may try and find one of their cd's.
